About the College

College of Public Health is one of the 6 colleges at China Medical University which was accredited in August 2003, from the 1957 established China Medical College, by the Ministry of Education.

Our College has 4 undergraduate departments, 3 master programs and one doctoral program.

Mission and Goals

The College of Public Health is to train students to work in public health disciplines to deal with risk issues generated from industrialization and urbanization, to promote population health and occupational safety and to prevent diseases. The College also shares in the mission of the University: to train physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses and allied health professionals. The College provides these future professionals with knowledge and skills to judge and analyze scientifically the health problems of general population and underserved areas, and to recognize the environmental and socioeconomic determinants of health and disease.

 

To fulfill the mission, the College has the following goals:

  • Conduct innovative and effective programs of education, research, service and administration for environmental and health issues in Taiwan, especially in central Taiwan.

  • Prepare health specialists in public health and preventive medicine.

  • Establish relationships with communities and organizations for collaboration in health issues.

  • Disseminate for community and public policy measures that contribute the health improvement in general population.

In order to fulfill these goals, the University’s teaching excellence spirit: “Foresee (4C) Our Future” is adapted in the education: by learning for competence, with compassion, in context, via constructivism.

Centers

  • Biostatistics Center: an independent center of the university with faculty from College of Public Health (6) and College of Medicine (1).

  • Center for Rural Community Health: a program granted by the Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

 

Program Requirements for College of Public Health Students.

Bachelors

    Students are admitted by either application for admissions or taking the annual joint entrance examination of all universities and colleges in Taiwan. All third year high school or vocational high school students can apply for admission either through high school recommendation or self-application. All applicants are expected to submit the department application with a statement of purpose, academic test score, high school transcript, extracurricular activity evidences, and letters of recommendation. Approximately 10 to 20% students are admitted from application for admissions. Most students are enrolled by taking the entrance examination.

    All freshmen in the College of Public Health are expected to reside at the branch campus in Beigang, Yun Lin County, for the first school year for the courses of basic sciences, human culture, philosophy, ethics, etc. Students receive the sophomore, junior and senior education at the main campus in Taichung. In general, students are expected to complete approximately 120-140 credits for the bachelor degree. All students must complete core courses in Public Health, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health, Health Administration and Policy, and other requirements. Students admitted starting in 2007 academic year are expected to have sufficient English training, such as completing the “General English Proficiency Test”, TOFEL at 480 level,  or other equivalency including English remedy classes.

 

Graduate Studies

A. Master of Science in Public HealthM.S.P.H.

Admission

 In addition to the university’s minimum requirements, all applicants are expected to submit the departmental or institutional application, a statement of purpose, study plan and letters of recommendation. Approximately 20% of master students are admitted by self-application, and the rest of 80% are recruited by entrance examination offered by the departmental or institutional office.

 Students admitted to the master program must have a bachelor’s degree in public health, or in other appropriate field.

 

Advising.

 Each new master student is expected to meet with faculty in the department or institute and identify his or her study interest for an adviser appointment. Students are expected to meet with their advisers frequently. The adviser is responsible for the student’s academic progress and thesis work. Students may concentrate in any area of specialization in their own department or other institute the faculty being able to assist.

 

Foreign language requirement.

 Master students are expected to submit a score of 520 on the TOEFL, other equivalency, or taking remedy English classes.

 

Course Requirements

 Students must complete courses at least for 24 credits and the thesis of 6 credits adhere to the departmental or institutional rules in at least two years. Part time students must complete at least 3-year graduate residence. Mandatory core courses include Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Seminar. Any department required course may be waived by the course committee consent if the student either has taken a similar course or can pass a waiver examination. Students must maintain good performance in each course during graduate residence. Students must complete a thesis and take a comprehensive examination. A thesis committee of at least 3 faculty members should be established for the final examination. One third of the committee members is from outside of the university. A peer-reviewed publication completed while a student can be used to substitute the thesis.

 

B. Doctoral Degree

Admission.

 Institute of Environmental Health in the College of public Health offers doctoral program starting in 96-academic year (2007). The Institute may annually recruit 5 students for this program . Two students are recruited by self-application and the other 3 are selected from students who take the entrance examination. Students submit application for admission or take the entrance examination must have a master degree and are expected to submit study plan and letter of recommendation.

 A master student with an excellent performance can also request for admission to the doctoral program.

 

Advising.

 Each new student is expected to meet with faculty at the Institute of Environmental Health to identify the study interest for an adviser appointment.The process must completed by the time the student has completed a qualifying examination. The student is expected to meet with his or her adviser frequently.

 The adviser is responsible for the student’s academic process and the dissertation work. The student may concentrate in any area of specialization within the institute or outside departments. The adviser must be a faculty member adhere to the minimum requirements of both the University and the Institute. Students must submit the research proposal for dissertation work within one year after the completion of the qualifying examination. An adviser committee of at least 5 faculty members should be established for the oral defense for the dissertation proposal. At least 1/3 of committee members are from the University and 1/3 from outside of the University.

 

Major Field or Subdisciplines.

 Doctoral students may focus on any area of specialization in public health, not limited to environmental health. Students are encouraged to conduct interdisciplinary study.

 

Course requirements.

 Students must complete courses at least for 26 credits and the dissertation of 12 credits adhere to the University and Institute rules in at least 3 years. Students are mandated to take at least two semesters of seminar credits and one semester of consultation credits. For students who do not have a degree in the field related to public health, they are recommended to take one course in public health, two full courses in biostatistics, one course in epidemiology, and one course in environmental health. Students may concentrate in any other courses with consultation of the Institute Director or their advisers.

 

Written and/or oral qualifying examinations.

 All doctoral students are required to complete the university written and/or oral qualifying examination(s) before doctoral advancement to candidacy. A qualifying examination committee consisting of at least 3 faculty members are established annually by submitting request to the Institute Director when the student is ready to take the examination. After completing the qualification examination, the student may be advanced to candidacy and commence work on the dissertation study proposal. After passing the oral examination of research proposal, the committee supervise the progress of the dissertation work. Students are expected to summit annually a progress report and make presentation in the institute seminar.

 

Final oral examination

 The student should perform original, independent research for the dissertation that demonstrates the student’s ability in a distinct contribution to knowledge in the field of study. The final oral defense of the dissertation is required, but no more than twice.
